| Dearly transfigured people of God, I am at summer camp, Camp for Adults with the Diocese of Arizona. Every year, all adults in the Diocese are invited to gather at Chapel Rock in Prescott and worship, pray, learn, and share activities together. I cannot promote this camp experience enough. At Camp for Adults, we are a gathering of Episcopalians and Full Communion (or soon to be) partners from all over the state. United Methodists and Lutherans (ELCA) have joined us every year as we experience what it means to be the universal body of Christ together. This year, thanks to a grant received from The Episcopal Church for precisely this purpose, we were able to continue, and even dive deeper with, last year’s theme of being the Anglican Communion together. Our keynote speaker is the Most Rev. Josiah Idowu-Fearon, former Secretary General of the Anglican Communion and a retired Archbishop from the Church of Nigeria, the second-largest Episcopal church in the world after only the Church of England. The Secretary General is the second most senior leader of the Anglican Communion after the Archbishop of Canterbury. The role is to guide the everyday functions of the Communion and to walk alongside the member churches to address differences and strengthen what is in common. We have learned so much already from Archbishop Josiah about the Episcopal Christian faith, shared by somewhere between 85 – 110 million Anglicans worldwide. We also share our faith with around 77 million Lutherans as our Full Communion partners and, soon, also with our United Methodist family too. This experience this year is a reminder that our Baptism unites us all as equal members of the invisible and universal Church, the catholic Church. We also share in the same Holy Communion, the participation in the body and blood of Christ through which we receive Jesus’ grace. Whether we worship in The Episcopal Church in the USA, the Church of England, the Church of Nigeria, the Anglican Church of Canada, the Episcopal Church of Sudan, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, the Church of Sweden, the Mar Thoma Syrian Church or any other visible body of Christians in the world, we all break the same bread and share the same cup. Among those churches just aforementioned, we have also declared that we recognize our visible bonds as belonging to the same invisible catholic Church. When we worship on Sunday, we are not worshipping alone. We worship with Christians from all time, past, present, and those yet to come. We are mysteriously and mystically untied with all of the faithful in eternity. Worship on Sunday is a glimpse of heaven, a time when we are peering through the window into the eternal joy of Christ. Blessings, Fr. Caleb |
