| The Rector’s Metamorpho-News |
| Dear transfigured people of God, I want to share about how God has put it on my heart to explore supporting a seminarian in the Anglican Communion. The Rev. Mauricio Salamão Mugunhe is a priest in the Diocese of Lesombo in the Anglican Church of Mozambique and Angola. This is the newest province of the worldwide Anglican Communion and already has nearly 1 million members. They are also one of three Portuguese-speaking Anglican churches along with Brazil and Portugal. When I was driving to Prescott for Camp for Adults at Chapel Rock with Archbishop Josiah, we were sharing some of our life stories and experiences. As we talked about our seminary studies, I told Archbishop Josiah about my time at Fuller Theological Seminary based in Pasadena, California. Fuller is a multi-denominational seminary with Presbyterians, Episcopalians, Methodists, Baptists, and many others. Fuller is rooted in Christian orthodoxy with an understanding that human reason and tradition are gifts from God. Fuller supports egalitarian ministry, opposes discrimination based on gender, gender identity, or sexual orientation, and was the first accredited Evangelical college of any kind to have an LGBTQ Christian club on campus. Archbishop Josiah mentioned that, in his capacity as Secretary General, he has met many other clergy across the Communion and one is a young man in Mozambique who shares my alma mater. He also shared that he has been connecting Fr. Mauricio with Anglican congregations that are able to provide support as he completes his degree at Fuller. Thankfully, because of other sources of support, Fr. Marucio’s semester costs are around $1,700. Due to your generous contributions, we already enough to support our brother in Christ for this semester. This is what the Church does and must continue to do. Look at what Paul writes to us in his letter to the Philippians (1:5-6) regarding what empowered and propelled the Gospel to spread so quickly across the Middle East, North Africa, and Europe. Paul writes “because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now, being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.” The Gospel is shared across the world because we support one another as a global family. Our brothers and sisters in Christ at home and abroad need our encouragement and our support to raise up spiritual leaders who will teach the truth of Christ in love and with inclusive welcome to all who hear it. Research conducted by academics at Durham University recently reported that the Anglican Communion now exceeds 100 million members, growing exponentially in Africa in particular. Now, two-thirds of all baptized Anglicans live among the countries of continental Africa. By supporting our brother in Christ, we are also being supported by Fr. Mauricio who prays for us and whose spiritual gifts will mutually strengthen faithful Episcopalians in the Americas because we are all interconnected. Thank you for faithfully supporting making disciples of all nations and I write this because I want you to know that you are directly impacting and growing the Anglican Communion worldwide. Blessings, Fr. Caleb |
